by Anitta
Brazilian pop star Anitta posted a video to her 61 million fans on Instagram, where she backed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of Brazil’s presidential election on October 25. In the 5-minute video, posted Friday, October 9, she explained why Lula was her candidate and why far-right Senator Flavio Bolsonaro is a danger to the country’s democracy. For Anitta, the traditional right in Brazil fielded legitimate conservative candidates, including leaders like Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Geraldo Alckmin, and Jose Serra. “The right and the left ran for elections, and in the end, everyone accepted the result of the votes,” she says. “They politely congratulated their opponents and life went on.” She says that all changed with Jair Bolsonaro and now, his son Flavio, who have used a “discourse of hate” to attack their political opponents and the country’s very democracy. -PD

On October 25, I’m going to vote for Lula for president.
I’ve already told you the reasons over all these years. Many years in campaigns, in interviews, clearly stating my views, clearly stating my opinions about issues in Congress. And this year, artistically, with my album, Equilibrivm.
I confess that this year I was very naïve. I was convinced that Lula was going to win in the first round. It was my own arrogance, really, because I thought it was impossible that, in 2026, most of the country would still give credibility to Bolsonarism.
But I was wrong, right? It’s important for us to recognize that and take a step back. As a friend of mine said these days, who already taught me a lot about politics and the left, she said to me, go study, go read a book. And I have been, because I always do. I don’t have much time, but I’ve made the time to study.
But unfortunately, life is busy. And not everyone has time, or even patience, to read a book before voting, or to express their political opinion.
And it’s a game. That’s it, it’s a democracy. But here’s the thing. The internet seems like a great solution to simplify things. But for very complex issues, it’s impossible for answers to be that simple.
Politics is complex. And this seems to be done on purpose, right? Bolsonarism thrives on a market that influences the population through social networks, with radical, religious roots. And it uses all this complexity to confuse people. Which brings up issues to go viral and to get votes through popularity. And this is always done by conquering engagement around something stupid. A stupid, absurd, criminal, or unbelievable post. Things that would be unacceptable if they were spoken about in public. Things that should not be said, are now repeated online like they were normal.
I still need to read a lot of books, but for me, the right, in my opinion, was Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Geraldo Alckmin, Jose Serra. At that time, the right and the left ran for elections, and in the end, everyone accepted the result of the votes. They politely congratulated their opponents and life went on.
That is politics. No one accused the others of fraud at the ballot box without proof. No one called for a coup d’états if they lost. The candidates accepted the rules of the game, better known as the Constitution, and that’s it.
And the most important thing was that no one promoted a discourse of hate. Hatred towards gays, transgenders, Blacks. Lesbians who have short hair and who now have to let her hair grow out, because Flávio is coming. Hatred toward women, because they shouldn’t have the right to vote. Hatred inside of homes where family members refuse to speak to each other because they voted for different candidates.
We shouldn’t be forced to hate the people we love, who helped us in life, who raised us, people in our families, friends who we like to hang out with.
Bolsonarism started this. That’s why I don’t call Bolsonarism, “right wing”.
I don’t.
I call it Bolsonarism. Because the right always existed, and things weren’t like this. The true right and left presented real government proposals, and then the citizens chose one side or the other.
That’s it.
Not Bolsonarism. Bolsonarism presents a media buffoonery, idolatry toward a foreign country, inciting people to fight, fanaticism toward the U.S. government, to the point of handing over our country and all our wealth to a guy who doesn’t give a shit about Brazil or the Brazilian people.
And the worst of all of this, which for me is the beginning of the end. It’s mixing religion with politics, making people believe that a political party is a choice between family and Jesus Christ, and promiscuity or the devil, and I don’t even know what the other option is.
This should be considered a crime.
The fact that you can see Lula’s weaknesses, which can’t be ignored, that can’t erase the benefits his projects brought, and have been bringing for years to so many people in need. So many people were lifted out of poverty. There are millions of stories there on the internet, they are not hard to find.
It’s just that people don’t want to see it.
And I want to say now to my audience, to my fans who comment, who are engaged, that I have been speaking out for years, without fear.
And I have lost millions of followers. Not thousands… millions. But I’ve never been afraid.
In just this year, 2026, I have spoken out in support of the causes that I always support, in favor of indigenous women, the environment, and against intolerance and religious racism. I also started the campaign to end the betting aps. I supported the end of the six-day workweek. I authorized the use of my music in campaigns, music that was on an album that, for me, is a political act in itself.
I chose this year to launch my latest album, because I know that you need to speak out every day. It’s a grassroots album that has a really important message for people. A message that is the opposite of everything that Bolsonarism preaches.
For me, you have to take a side every day. And that is what I’ve always done for years. You take a side when you choose who to work with, when you do your interviews, and in your work and art.
This is something I’m always thinking about and I would like to bring to you… If the future of the country depended only on your actions and what you do, not taking into account what you say on the internet, what you like and what you comment… what country would we have?
Thank God that when I ask myself this question, my conscience sleeps peacefully at night.
I’m a woman. A hardworker. I come from the favela. I’m candomblecista [a member of a Brazilian Afro-religion] and I’ve never abstained from speaking out. From defending positions on issues that I believe are important and bringing that to the public, in my own way.
I don’t know if it’s the way everyone sees things. But it’s what I believe. But that’s it, we have to speak out every day.
And I know I do it. I’ve always done it and I’ll always do it.
And those who follow me. Those who have followed me in recent days, over the last month, over the last year, or over the last 3, 4, 5 or 6 years, follow my defense of issues every day.
Standing in defense of something doesn’t just happen once. It’s not at the time you want or when it’s trending on the internet. We have to speak out every day. And every day I’m there.
My vote is 13. My vote is Lula. Because it can’t be anything else, considering everything that Brazil is going through right now.
This is a translation of Anitta's speech to her followers on Instagram on October 9. You can watch her full speech below. This speech was transcribed and translated by Panamerican Dispatch. The transcript of her statement in Portuguese is below.
Porque eu sou mulher, trabalhadora, vim da favela, sou candomblecista e nunca me abstive.
Sempre fiz e sempre farei.
E quem me acompanha, quem me segue, quem me acompanha nos últimos dias, no último mês, no último ano, nos últimos três, quatro, cinco, seis anos, acompanha o meu posicionamento.
